Pallet storage or a storage unit?

3 min ·
A storage unit is rented per square metre, pallet storage is paid per pallet. Which is cheaper for your business, and when?
If you need extra space for stock, there are two options: rent a storage unit or business unit, or have your pallets stored by a logistics provider. The difference is in what you pay for.
Renting a storage unit
With self storage or a business unit you rent square metres, usually per month and often on a contract of a year or longer. You also pay for empty space, and loading and unloading yourself takes time. High stacking is usually not possible, so you only use part of the height.
Pallet storage
With pallet storage you only pay for the pallets in storage, at Stockwell from €2.00 per pallet per week. The warehouse stores the pallets in high racking, and the warehouse team does the loading and unloading with forklifts.
| Storage unit | Pallet storage | |
|---|---|---|
| You pay for | Square metres | Pallets in storage |
| Term | Often 12 months | From 8 weeks |
| Loading and unloading | Do it yourself | Done by the warehouse |
| Scaling up and down | Rent a new unit | Per pallet |
Which should you choose?
If you need daily access to loose items, a storage unit is the better fit. If your stock is on pallets and the quantity varies, pallet storage is almost always cheaper and less work.
